"Denver Is Stuck In The 90s" (denver80222)

At the Rosh Hashanah table this past wednesday, I got to talking with my cousins about how I want VW Type 1, they asked "What's a Type-1" (first facepalm of the conversation). I thought "hey, most people dont know what a type-1 is" so I just explained that it was an original beetle. I said how my mom wont let me get one, They asked why and I said "because in her mind anything made in Germany equals made by Hitler" (obvious exaggeration but you get what I'm saying). They agreed with me that her type of thinking was preposterous and that she acquired it from her father, my grandfather. That conversation led to talking about how they just got their daughter's 2008 Jetta an oil change. They said that the car runs so much better since its oil change (second facepalm), Well no duh, I thought. They also said that and I quote, "All VWs are expensive to maintain" I responded with "only the Fuel-Injected ones, because of electronics" Then They said that Its more expensive to get a Vw an oil change (third Facepalm). Now I know from being on Oppo that the engine is designed to make it EASIER to change the oil, and that Oil for a VW is just as expensive as for a Ford. Are they getting ripped off? I told them that there is absolutely no reason for it to be more expensive, and they said and I quote "well all I know is that I pay more for my Jetta than for my Town & Country. I wish they cared about the mechanics of their car enough to question what other people say. Side note: their 2010 T&C is at 125k miles and is in PRISTINE physical condition, I marvel at it. It is silver with light fabric interior, I dont know how they keep it so nice with 3 kids.

Did you know that oil filters on VWs (at least on the Mk. V generation, can't speak to newer) are those retarded integrated type that actually have you remove and replace the filtering elements rather than simply unscrew and swap the filter itself? And that it's a pain in the arse?

It could be worse! My grandmother thought that since I got a VW it was a Beetle. This made me laugh though, not loose my patience.

Yeah and you need like a 33mm socket to get the damn thing off.

My mom saw a 2015 vette in a glass display box being pulled on a trailer.
She had no idea what the car was and when I asked her what it looked like she said "It was blue sports car."
"Could you be more descriptive?"
"It had lines behind the front fender."
I wondered what could possibly be valuable enough to be put in a glass box on a trailer so I showed a picture of an AC Cobra.
"Yeah! It was that color of blue, but it looked like it was from the 80s."
A painful conversation later and I figured out that it was a new Corvette.

Okay, we're gonna have problems if she calls the 911 a "Hitler-car" or "Hitler-mobile".
Rule 1 in the house of K-Roll: Don't talk shit about Porsche.

I like those type of oil filters on BMWs becuase they are mounted on top of the engine and it is easy to swap the filter elements.
Doing a quick GIS for the MKV GTi, they seem to be mounted underside the engine.
Best implementation is the one done by Subaru. Whole filter is replaceable and is on top of the engine.

I don't even remember the size it took. Sister took the GTI with her when she moved out, and good riddance.

Yeah, it's a pain on the VW precisely because it's under the engine.
The Subaru implementation (also the C4 ZR-1 implementation) is decent, except you really have to do your homework on the filters you buy. A lot of brands don't have good anti-drainback valves and so make a real mess when you change them. I don't even know what brand the white one on the ZR-1 is, but I do know I'm going to replace it with a Bosch 3401.
